Board of Directors Update – 2016 & Beyond

Biggest Year Ever

2016 was Franklin County Humane Society’s best year ever. We have so many new volunteers coming to our group through referrals from other volunteers, animal hospitals and pet stores. Thanks to such wonderful people, were able to save 872 cats and dogs this year. We were awarded a grant from Petco Foundation allowing us to provide over 170 free spays and neuters to the community, as well as many more through SNIF, our low cost spay and neuter program. These surgeries have prevented thousands of unwanted litters and kept those animals out of the shelters.

All of these wonderful things without any funding from the county or the Humane Society of the US, without a facility or shelter, and without any paid employees. Every dollar we have raised has been through the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. Each animal saved has been taken care of by loving people who have selflessly opened their homes and hearts. Every volunteer should be proud of these accomplishments.

Summary of Our Efforts

Our fundraising efforts were greatly helped by three main volunteer-organized events. June brought us our annual Putt’n for Paws Golf Tournament which attracted over 100 golfers and raised over $10,000. In July, author David Rosenfelt paid us a second visit for a book signing and inspirational talk during a very elegant evening at The Boondocks. This event, featuring wonderful food and great silent auction items, raised over $14,000, and we were honored Mr. Rosenfelt visited us again. October saw our 14th annual Paws for Life 5k Road Race and One Mile Dog Walk. This was the first big fundraiser we ever held, and it has grown in popularity and participation each year. This event raised over $14,000 and was once again a beautiful day for the animals.

Additionally, we had other fundraising events throughout the year such as quarter frenzy auctions, Go Fund Me campaigns, t-shirt and sweatshirt sales and supply drives. The community really came together to help us help more animals than ever before.

A Name Change

The last big piece of news is the decision to change the name of our rescue program. We will remain the Franklin County Humane Society, but our rescue efforts will take place under the name Paws For Life. Changing this name should help us reach more people beyond Franklin County. It should also help with the confusion we sometimes face when people think we’re associated with the county shelter or the Humane Society of the US.

Needless to say, 2016 was a wonderful year, and we are very excited to see what this amazing team can do in 2017!
